Women are severely underrepresented in media, particularly in news, and have been so for decades. The outcome of underrepresentation is not only an imbalanced picture of the world, one in which women are largely absent, but a world in which women are excluded from the public debates and conversations that shape their futures.

Around the world there is a growing community of people working to source more women as experts in the news media. They are responding to the astonishing statistics that, globally, women represent only 24% of the people we see, hear and read about in the news and just 19% of expert sources – rates that have not changed in nearly two decades.

A range of strategies have been developed to respond to the obstacles limiting women’s voice; strategies that are relevant to diverse media markets and cultures. Reflect Reality captures the breadth of this expertise, serving as a toolkit and call-to-action to increase the extent that women’s authoritative voice appears in the news.

Reflect Reality is a resource for newsrooms, journalists and concerned actors in the business world. Reflect Reality offers a step-by-step guide and tools for newsrooms to source more women in the news, as well as strategies for companies and organizations to do their part. In addition, this comprehensive resource enables a rich understanding about the global deficit of women’s voices, and how gender parity of sources will make journalism and our societies better. Learn from the testimonials of over two dozen individuals and organizations, and from our pilot projects with four distinct news teams.
